Cleanings and ExamsWhy are routine evaluations and cleanings important for oral health?Cleanings and Exams

To maintain good oral health and wellness, routine dental exams and cleanings are critical. At Cambridge Family Dental of Cambridge, Wisconsin, our dentist truly understands how significant regular maintenance is in preventing problems such as periodontal disease and tooth decay. We work alongside patients to stress how important these visits are to achieving and maintaining oral health for a lifetime!

What is a dental cleaning?

Our team describes teeth cleaning, or prophylaxis, as a treatment to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. This is done right in the dental chair with our dental hygienists at Cambridge Family Dental. Our team wants to help remove issues that may be difficult to achieve at home with daily brushing and flossing. Because plaque, tartar, calculus, and bacteria can still build up even with proper hygiene habits each day, it is vital that you visit the dental office for assistance.

What happens during a comprehensive oral evaluation?

After a dental hygienist has cleaned the teeth, they are evaluated by the dentist during an oral cavity examination. This may include not only a physical evaluation of the teeth and gums but also dental X-rays to look at the health of the teeth and bones beyond what the naked eye can see.

The dentist may measure the pocket depth between the teeth and gums to see if patients have a condition known as periodontal disease, more often referred to as gum disease. This is referred to as a periodontal examination. Periodontal disease can become a chronic problem, so prevention is key!

During your oral cavity examination, our team will educate you on how to care for your teeth between visits to reduce the risk of tooth decay and disease.
