Can I straighten my teeth without metal braces?

At Cambridge Family Dental of Cambridge, Wisconsin, Dr. Angela Bauer Williams offers a wide range of solutions for her patients who want to improve the appearance of their smile. In addition to cosmetic dentistry, we are here to provide solutions for an imperfect smile–including our alternative to traditional braces: Invisalign orthodontics. Dr. Angela Bauer Williams encourages patients interested in realigning their teeth to find out if they are a good candidate for clear aligners, another form of orthodontics.

How do invisible teeth aligners work?

Traditional braces typically utilize metal brackets glued to the teeth’ surfaces and connected with a guide wire. This wire and bracket system has been used for decades to align the teeth. However, many patients, especially adults, do not like the idea of hiding their teeth behind metal. Teeth straightening with aligners is an alternative treatment to improve the smile’s appearance without metal.

Instead, this treatment, known as “clear braces,” works with a series of clear plastic trays formed from digital impressions of the patient’s current dental arch. Specialized software simulates the movement of teeth into better alignment and creates a series of trays to be used in order, two weeks at a time, to achieve the desired final results. With proper compliance and care of the transparent aligner trays, many patients can achieve their brand-new smile in approximately one year!

How do I use clear aligner trays?

The aligner trays require compliance from the patient. Each tray is worn for two weeks and swapped out as directed. Patients need to wear each tray for at least 20 hours a week for them to be effective and to avoid potential delays. Trays are removed to eat, drink, brush, and floss and can be worn at night while sleeping to get the desired changes in the prescribed amount of time quoted at the beginning of treatment.
